hoping none of the runners feel like we do here at the race workers’ bunkhouse.
i am so beat.
the last week has been nothing but intense.
way too much time on my feet
and lifting and toting for these old bones.
late nights getting intimate with the keyboard
and burning my eyes out on the big screen.
seeing the runners coming in and setting up camp today
was invigorating.
suddenly all the effort was worth it.
15 of the best backyard athletes in the world.
the 15 best the US has to offer.
the anticipation in the air was palpable
as runners and crews bustled about setting up camp
and toting in a ridiculous amount of supplies.
there was talk of wednesday…
and even thursday.
i know the reality of what is about to happen
is a weight to be borne.
they have to run for two days
200 miles
322 kilometers
just to break the ice.
just to see sunrise on monday.
just to have days and days yet to run.
knowing that all around the world
other athletes are thinking the same thoughts
dreaming the same dreams
and having the same nightmares.
i wonder if they will hear whistles in their sleep?
